1911 - Amundsen:
"The Great Ice Barrier (Ross Ice Shelf) is flat in all directions with a splendid surface, the dogs have pulled us with scarcely a foot needed to be placed the last two days. Another two of them had to be shot. To the south we can see mountain peaks through our glasses."
