Roald Amundsen, Norwegian South Pole Expedition on the ship Fram, 1910 - 1912.

1911

Hanssen: "Why, I believe my heel's gone!"

Off came his stockings, and there was a big, dead heel, like a lump of tallow. It did not look well. He rubbed it until he thought he "could feel something again,". Stuberud's went the same way, -40C (-40F).

Several dogs unable to pull were let go, some were never seen again, one dropped down dead.

The return was chaotic, every man for himself. The first sledges reached Framheim at 4pm, the last at 12.30am, frostbite, inexperience and navigation problems slowed the last sledges.
