Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events

Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914.

1912 - Edward Bage, Belgrave Ninnis and Frank Bickerton work on converting Mawson's damaged monoplane into an air tractor in a hangar made of packing cases liberally lined with wind driven snow that came in through the cracks. It was ultimately unsuccessful.

Otto Nordenskjold, Swedish Antarctic Expedition on the ship Antarctic, 1901-1904.

1903 - Andersson, Duse and Grunden "black with soot and unrecognisable" from the now sunk ship Antarctic reach their compatriots at Snow Hill after walking from Hope Bay. The meeting place is later named Cape Well-met. A celebration as close to a banquet as can be managed is held.
