1908 - Night watch - Douglas Mawson, Shackleton's Nimrod expedition, Cape Royds hut. Station personnel in Antarctica take it in turns to be on night watch even today, in case of fire or unexpected weather conditions that could cause damage, the night watch can rouse everyone if needs be
1916 - The Endurance life boats with Shackleton reach Elephant Island the first landfall for 497 days., ".. laughing uproariously.., smiles.., pebbles treated like gold, first land in 18 months". A big breakfast of hot milk, huge sealsteaks, unlimited blubber, all day long eating and drinking.
