1903 - The Morning leaves Hut Point with Ernest Shackleton (picture-left) invalided home against his will after his troubles on the South Pole journey caused in part by scurvy, The Discovery which should also have left is still iced in.
1958 - Sir Vivian Fuchs and his team arrive at Scott Base in McMurdo Sound the first team to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast via the pole.
