1911 - Dennis Lillie, biologist on Terra Nova with a glass sponge. In 1918 he had a mental breakdown and spent 42 of his 79 years in hospitals in part paid by Scott's Memorial Fund. His 3 years spent on the ship in and around Antarctica were his happiest. “the lovely, laughing Lillie”


1897 - SY Belgica leaves Antwerp, Belgium under the command of Adrien de Gerlache with Roald Amundsen and Frederick Cook amongst the crew, they would be the first to overwinter in Antarctica.
