1908 - First motor car arrives in Antarctica on the ship Nimrod during Shackleton's expedition. "Under favourable circumstances Lieutenant Shackleton computes that the machine can travel 150 miles in twenty four hours and .... he thinks there would be a fair chance of sprinting to the pole" - Interview in "The Car". The reality was otherwise, the wheels spun on the snow and the engine suffered from overheating.
1913 - Douglas Mawson reaches Aladdin's Cave (a small shelter and depot dug into the ice) after a harrowing journey including the loss of his two travelling companionsto find three oranges and a pineapple which had been brought from the Ship!
