Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events

1909 - with Charcot on the Pourqoi-Pas "Frachat and Boland were poisoned under the tent covering the picket-boat by carbonic oxide". A not uncommon occurrence in early Antarctic exploration when burning fossil fuels with inadequate ventilation to retain heat. They both recovered.

1916 - After 165 days living on floating ice floes in the Weddell Sea, Shackleton, launches 3 lifeboats for Elephant Island as the ice breaks beneath them. The journey will be described by some as the worst part of the whole ordeal.
