1994 - The last dogs were removed from Antarctica 95 years after they first arrived on the Southern Cross on the 17th of Feb 1899. An environmental clause in the Antarctic Treaty required non-native species to be removed. An integral part of Antarctic Exploration was gone forever . "It will always be difficult for those who have not shared the experience to understand the pure delight of driving behind dogs and being utterly dependent on them for life itself"
1915 - Shackleton's ship Endurance reaches its farthest south at 77°S 35'W in the Weddell Sea. It is stuck in pack-ice which is starting to freeze solidly around the ship, after today the ship starts to drift north carried by ocean currents and the motion of the ice.
