1912 - Edward Atkinson and Patrick Keohane start across the Great Ice Barrier with a dog team to try and meet Scott's party on their way back from the South Pole. Temperatures were low, and both men obtained but little sleep, finding that a tent occupied by two men only is a very cold place. Picture l to r. Cherry-Garrard, Keohane, Atkinson.

1911 - Hut Point, midnight. In the summer months inside the Antarctic Circle, there is a period where the sun never sets. Even outside of this time, the sun only dips slightly below the horizon so it never really gets dark, sunset fades but before it is gone sunrise begins. Edward Wilson watercolour, painted on Scott's 1910-1912 South Pole expedition. This scene was almost a year to the day before Wilson perished on the way back from the South Pole with Scott on the 29th of March 1912.
