Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.
1911 - Scott on the Beardmore glacier:
"Surface for manhauling remains difficult, sledge runners get stuck once stopped a good heave together is needed to get going again. The valley slopes are very steep, up to 60°, bare rock and stratification higher up which should be interesting."
