Robert Falcon Scott, British Antarctic Expedition (South Pole Expedition) on the ship Terra Nova, 1910 - 1913.
1911 - Laying a depot for the southern sledging party. A large snow cairn is made with a marker on a tall pole supported by guy ropes. Even such large structures could be difficult to find on the featureless, flat ice-barrier. especially if visibility was poor.
Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914.
1911 - Douglas Mawson and the Australian Antarctic Expedition sail south from Hobart on the SY Aurora. Mawson had turned down a place on Captain Scott's prestigious expedition to plan his own. He successfully raised funding for an ambitious scientific programme.
