1911 - The Terra Nova and Fram at the Bay of Whales. Amundsen returned from a sledging trip at 6.30 am and invited 3 from the Terra Nova to breakfast aboard the Fram, 4 then returned to lunch on the Terra Nova followed by a larger group visiting the Fram, Scott was not present. "I think that at that time no member of the ship's company had any idea that we had any rivals in this portion of the Antarctic, though most of us knew that Amundsen intended to try for the Pole. "


1902 - The first flight in Antarctica by Captain Scott on the Discovery in a hydrogen balloon named Eva reached 180m (600ft) "I swayed about in what appeared a very inadequate basket and gazed down on the rapidly diminishing figures below, I felt some doubt as to whether I had been wise in my choice". Shackleton made the second flight and took photographs. After a third flight by William Heald AB the wind became stronger and the balloon was damaged.


1903 - The Scottish Antarctic Expedition land at Saddle Island, South Orkneys, the first landing since 1838.
