Erich von Drygalski, German National Antarctic Expedition on the ship Gauss, 1901 - 1903.

1902 - The Gauss frozen into the sea ice 74km (46m) from the coast at the end of winter. A path made through a large wind tail of snow serves as a gangway onto the ship.


Hubert Wilins, Wilkins-Hearst Expedition on the ship Hektoria, 1928 - 1929.

1928 - The first powered flight in Antarctica took off from Deception Island piloted by Ben Eielson, a twenty minute trip.
