1900 - Borchgrevink and Captain Jensen narrowly escape drowning on the coast at the foot of Mount Terror. Alerted to a 15-20 ft wave made by the calving of an iceberg they quickly got as high up a hill as they could and clung onto vertical rock while waves washed over their heads.
1913 - News of the death of Captain Scott's Polar Party reaches New Zealand, two men went ashore at Oamaru and sent a coded message by telegraph while the Terra Nova sailed to Lyttlelton staying at sea for 24 hours after the cable was sent to London.
