1912 - l-r Robert Forde, Frank Debenham, Thomas Griffith Taylor, Tryggve Gran just after being picked up by the Terra Nova while walking across sea-ice back to base. 3 weeks after their due pick-up they started to walk, they were seen on the ice by the ship about 2 weeks later.


1912 - Tom Crean walks 35 miles across deep snow and crevasses alone to save the life of Edward Evans. "So it fell to my lot to do the 30 miles for help, and only a couple of biscuits and a stick of chocolate to do it. Well, sir, I was very weak when I reached the hut".


1903 - Still un-relieved by their ship, a storm from the south froze the sea round Snow Hill Island forcing Nordenskjold and 5 other men to spend a second winter with no new supplies. 400 penguins, 30 seals and skuas had been taken for food and fuel for the forthcoming winter.
