1911 - Thomas Clissold, cook with Scott poses for photographer Ponting after climbing "Matterhorn" iceberg, Mount Erebus in the background. Clissold fell 20ft on the way down concussing himself and injuring his back leading to his removal from the South Pole "Motor Party".
1934 - Richard E. Byrd attempting to winter alone in Antarctica is saved by a rescue party on their 3rd attempt as he is being slowly poisoned by carbon monoxide from a poorly ventilated stove. He managed 5 months (you have to wonder why).
