Jim Stammers hauling snowblocks for freshwater - 1958

If they weren't nearby, you had to go and get them. Early winter could be very problematic for fresh water, any flowing water had long since frozen but there wasn't hardly any snowfall near to base to snowblock.
Wouldn't be a problem now as reverse-osmosis plants that get fresh water from sea water at the expense of inordinate amounts of fossil fuels became de-rigueur in the late 1980's.
