View from the cockpit on flight from McMurdo to Pole Station

Mountain peaks above snow and glaciers.
The continent essentially has a ring of mountains surrounding a central plateau. The central plateau is covered with snow and ice - to a depth of about 10,000 feet at the pole - and this snow and ice spills out through the mountain passes, forming glaciers.
