Year-round studies means some less than great working days too. That pattern on the surface of the sea means that it's squally and probably remarkably cold despite the lack of sea-ice. Fiddly jobs on steep snow slopes is not really what you want to be doing in such conditions, but fair-weather science isn't an option in Antarctica.
