The big type-writer thing is a teletext machine which would sometimes start to clatter away in the middle of the night when you were on night-watch causing much excitement. It was invariably a report of a ship being in trouble somewhere thousands of miles away that you could do nothing about anyway. For communications purposes, Signy like other Antarctic bases was classed in the same way as a ship at sea.
