Showing the optical phenomenon called âlight pillarâ. The light pillar appears as a column of light extending from the base of the sun, which is just out of view at the top of the picture, down to the South Pole Station at the horizon. A number of amazing optical phenomena including light pillars occur at the South Pole during conditions of clear sky ice crystal precipitation.
