Mount Erebus seen from LDB on a Clear Day

Various buildings including the balloon hangers were put on berms for the winter. Most snow in Antarctica does not so much fall as it skitters across the ice until it hits something and sticks - so by putting these buildings on berms, the drifting snow collects around the berms rather than the buildings, making it easier to dig the buildings out the next summer. Buildings on the Ross Ice Shelf are also built on skids so that they can be pulled around and on top of the new snow each year. Otherwise they gradually become buried.
