Eventually after all of the to and froing of ships and personnel through the
Antarctic summer, "Last Call" arrives. This is the last
ship of the season before the start of the winter and is the last
direct contact with the outside world for over 8 months.
This picture is of the last departing launch of the season. Taking the last of the summer-only staff and more poignantly the last of the winterers, some the people on this launch haven't been more than about 5 miles from the base in the last two years. This moment marks for nearly all the last they will ever see of this Antarctic base that has given memories that will last a life time. For those still on base and watching them leave, thoughts of their own feelings when their turn comes and of the unknown winter to come. This is probably the dullest picture to look at on this site, but one of the most poignant to those who have experienced a similar event. |
