These low walls formed around the copper kettles of the blubber ovens, the kettles themselves are long gone. The surrounding sand would be built up in a mound, when the blubber boiled over and ran down the sides it would stick the sand, gravels and stones together in a concretion, these dark brown concretions are what you see here.
