Barentsburg is a very strange place. Though Svalbard is Norwegian, a treaty dating from 1920 allows other signatory countries to exploit natural resources. The Dutch founded the mining town of Barentsburg in the 1920's and sold their concession to Russia in 1932. It has remained as a Russian mining town ever since. There was once a population of about 1000, though these days it is down to around 400, it still exports coal, 100,000 tonnes or so as of 2008.

More than anything though Barentsburg is like stepping back in time to a 1970's Soviet township, or at least how I would expect one to be
