Snow Algae - Svalbard - 2
Svalbard / Spitsbergen pictures, travel in the Arctic
Pink, red and green algae often grow on snow and ice patches in the summer. They are fed by melt water that brings dissolved nutrients and take advantage of the long daylight hours. Ironically perhaps the red colour is a pigment that protects the algae from the effects of too-high uv and light levels.
