We took this picture when we
found some bear tracks on the beach, that's my son
Niall playing at being a bear victim, much laughter.
It was very shortly afterwards while we were still
in Svalbard that we heard that a teenage British boy
had been killed while camping by a polar bear and a
couple of his companions seriously injured. Which
puts it into perspective, you've only got to look at
the size of those tracks to get an idea of how big
this bear must have been and how little of a chance
you'd have when coming across one.
It made us appreciate our guide and his shotgun all
the more.
