Even though the island around the base could become
ice-free, there was still plenty of impressive scenery not far away. Of
course an ice-free site is best to build a base on, so you can easily
build on static bed-rock and don't have too many problems with excessive
meltwater which may also cause additional problems by freezing in
awkward places.
