Signy Island Antarctica base summer 5
Moving a generator caboose into position to provide
additional power for the base. Many Antarctic bases have a collection of
such "units" around them. It is far easier to take machinery, scientific
equipment and other facilities in this manner than to place them in
existing buildings. Specialist conditions can be built into the
container, set-up and testing can be done before deployment so that the
short Antarctic summer is not taken up trying to get something working.
Also, at the end of the project, the unit can simply be removed with the
minimum of change needed to the rest of the base.
