Signy Island Antarctica base 8
The aerial array behind the base to help us stay in
contact with the world. At this time, radio was still very important,
though has now largely given way to satellite communications which were
there in the mid 1980's were less reliable than they are now. The
structure to the far right is the "anno tower" which the anemometer
(wind gauge) was mounted, there was also a powerful light to identify
the base from a distance. These days, there is also a remote camera that
records the sea-ice state in the winter months when the base is
unmanned, so maintaining an unbroken record from 1947.
