Kapitan Khlebnikov in fast-ice

Fast ice is ice that is held "fast" to the coast. It is often very flat and makes for excellent travelling conditions (on the ice that is, less easy by ship!). It does make it possible for ships to pull up like this one and let people off the ship to go and wander around on the ice. Not an awful lot to see by definition of what the flat ice is, but well worth doing for the somewhat surreal experience of walking off a ship onto hard ice and then getting back aboard to break through it.
