My guess is that this sentence:
"On that job he told me about the time he went to the south pole to search for Shackleton..."
is where the error lies, or rather the mention of Shackleton. You've probably found that the Wyatt Earp was used in the late 1940's by the Australians under Douglas Mawson and made 4 voyages into Antarctic waters. Reading between the lines, I'd say that maybe "Mawson" became "Shackleton" and a story recounted from a third-hand source became altered. The voyage and incidents that you mention were probably true, but the circumstances of the voyage in a different era and for a different purpose, with a voyage commanded by Mawson taking a couple of steps towards another Antarctic hero.
