Wood jewelry box, 'Legend of Sita and the Golden Deer I'
$49.95

In the Ramayana, Rama was sent into exile to live in a forest, and his wife Sita followed him. Meanwhile, Rahwana the evil king of Alengka, was enchanted by the beauty of Sita, and wanted to have her as his concubine. He sent one of his most trusted knights, Marica, to tempt Sita by transforming himself into a golden deer. Sita was taken by her curiosity and asked Rama to catch the golden deer. Rama marked a magic circle in the ground for protection, warning Sita to stay within it while he was away looking for the deer. Rahwana then appeared in the form of an old beggar enticing Sita to leave the circle, and the evil king promptly kidnapped her. Khun Santiparp crafts a delicate hexagonal box in the classic Benjarong style. Benjarong takes its name from the Sanskrit words panch and rang, which means "five colors." It refers to the traditional style of hand-painted Thai porcelain - red, yellow, white, green, and blue are the most frequently used colors. Santiparp kneads a mixture of kaolin and then shapes the piece. Once dry, it is fired for five to six hours at 800 degrees C and glazed with a mixture of burnt lime, wood ashes, and secret natural materials. The piece is fired again for twelve to thirteen hours at a temperature of 1,280 degrees C. When the piece is totally cooled, Santiparp applies gild and enamel by hand, one color at a time. He fires the piece a third time for five to six hours at 700 to 800 degrees C in an electric kiln with electronically controlled temperatures. Care instructions: These pieces will shine forever and require only a damp cloth to wipe away dust. Benjarong is not dishwasher safe. If cleaning is needed, use a gentle dish soap and soft sponge. Never use abrasive pads or scouring agents. For decorative purposes only. |

First the patterns are engraved free-hand with a sharp-pointed tool, and then the piece is dusted with a wooden powder. The black background is covered with a yellow gummy paint, which comes from a tree resin that has been placed in water for a day. After that, a thin coat of lacquer is applied to the entire surface and, before it dries, gold leaf is placed over it. The piece is then left to dry for approximately 20 hours. Finally, the whole lacquerware is thoroughly rinsed in water rinsing out impurities or unattached gold leaf. The result is a piece of rich artistry, where shimmering gold engraved designs contrast against a high-gloss black background. |
