Sword in hand, Santiago Matamoros leads a battle charge on horseback. This saint's career was a long one. From the fifth through the fifteenth centuries, Saint James was invoked by the faithful during the struggle to rid Spain of the Moors with a rousing battle cry of "Santiago y cierra Espa�a!" ("James and close Spain!") He became known as Santiago Matamoros, or "Moor slayer," and was brought to Peru along with all the other Roman Catholic saints during the conquest. Tenderly cradling the baby Jesus, Saint Rose of Lima is crowned with flowers. Born on August 30, 1586, Isabel Flores de Oliva was the first American to be canonized, in 1671. Each year the devout make a pilgrimage to the chapel in Santa Rosa de Quives where she lived and worshipped. Alberto Torres creates a glowing portrait of the patroness of Peru, America and the Philippines. He presents the work in an elaborate frame of carved cedar wood with bronze leaf.
