Where the name comes from: Ancient Greek adamas - unbreakable. Diamond has many records for extremes amongst materials being the hardest, stiffest, least compressible, best thermal conductor and most transparent.Where the stones come from: Found worldwide, most currently commercial diamonds come from Russia, Botswana, Australia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Some diamonds are thought to have originated in deep space and been brought to earth by meteorites.
Chemistry: Carbon, with up to 0.3% of nitrogen. Diamond is one of the two naturally found forms of carbon along with graphite, it is the only elemental gemstone.
Colors: Pure diamonds are colorless, there are varying degrees of yellow tints, There are also the very rare "fancy color diamonds" which can have any color.
...and another thing: Diamonds are formed in the earth's mantle about 150km below the surface, geological processes then bring them within mining reach, diamonds are hundreds of millions of years old. Industrial diamonds are not used for jewelry, they are made synthetically. Diamonds are one of the four precious gemstones along with emeralds, rubies and sapphires
