The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition
was the first overland crossing of Antarctica, succeeding in the 1950's
what Sir Ernest Shackleton had attempted to do in his ill-fated expedition
in 1914-1917. British Explorer Vivian Fuchs and New Zealander Edmund Hilary
(he of first man up Everest fame) led the expedition which took place during
the IGY - International Geophysical Year.
