For some people it starts in childhood, for others it becomes a background niggle until they finally get to go, what's the reason for you wanting to travel to the Antarctic?

I had the opportunity of going to McMuurdo in Oct of 1966 while I was in the US Navy Seabees. It's amazing how built up it is compared to when I was there. Would love to go back down and see it one more time

Hi Antarctis lovers,
my passion is volcano-climbing. I've seen a few of them, in locations like Ethiopia and Iran. Not to mention the classic ones in Italy. particularly, the lava lakes got my attention. This is why I look at Antarctica: Mount Erebus, on Ross Island, has one of the three permanent lava lakes. Thus, my project is to get to Ross Island, and climb Erebus for photo-taking. Of course, the other nearby attractions need attention, too (ice barrier, dry valleys, ...). Does anybody know of ways of getting there (other than dumping $100.000 with ANI or $15.000 with a cruise ship)? Lothar

other then getting in a snowball fight with a penguin, being somewhere where not many others have been is a motive. plus it's really cool to tell all your friends you've been there and they haven't.

I became interested in Antarctica as a child, where I was given a couple of hand me down books on the subject. I don't really know why I am so interested, from the pictures it looks so beautiful, and not many people get the opportunity to travel to such a place.

i can't even remember how i got interested in it, but i love cold climates and the idea of such an extreme wilderness where death can be such a real occurance is very exciting in my eyes...plus there are those penguins and i got started in collecting the penguin figurines after seeing the new penguin exhibit at Moody Gardens 6 yrs ago...they have this huge almost two story tank that they live in with stairs that wrap around it so on the bottom level you can see them swimming under the ice that makes up the top layer where they just rest and play around. they've recently started a new thing there where they dip the penguins feet in non-toxic paint and let them waddle across these huge sheets of paper and they make their little foot prints in different colored paint and the papers are then cut down to 8x10s and sold for $10 a piece and the money goes towards taking care of the penguins....i have yet to get my own painting.
