Found this link at http://slashdot.org -
http://sciencenews.org/view/generic/...dy%2C_neighbor! It's an article about a new study that suggests that 800 million years ago, the Transantarctics were abutted up to Death Valley (now one of the hottest places on earth), as part of a supercontinent called Rodinia. Thought folks here might like this, and might also want to take a look at these other links at Slashdot to articles about Antarctica: http://slashdot.org/tags/antarctica And yes, I do know the Henry Malmgren who was interviewed for this article: http://www.computerworld.com/action/...leId=904 9898 but I noticed a few inaccuracies worked there way in to that. I.e., the South Pole is at 9300 ft., not 12,000 - though physiologically it is equivalent to about 10,500 ft. because of the thinner atmosphere at the poles. Also, the article claims a date of 10 December 2007, but Henry says the temperature was -64F, which could only have been true if he was talking about wind chill. |
