Getting in touch, request for information, announcements etc
Well if you've reached here and don't know then a "FID" is a Falkland Islands Dependent or someone who has been "South" with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).
An OAE is an "Old Antarctic Explorer" an American term for someone who's been around in Antarctica for a while, several summers, or at least a Winter, the more the better of course. Wintering at the south polar station confers automatic OAE status.
Smoko is a (British) naval term for tea/coffee break - or more literally time for a smoke.
This is the forum for people who have been South, are going South or maybe are even there right now with BAS or any other country's Antarctic research programme.
