Default antarctica - here i come

I am looking at going to antarctica, and i was wanting some tips off the guys that have already been. When is a good time to go? What sort of size boat should i be looking at?
I have priced up all the clothing and stuff that i will need, but the slr camera is being a pain. Does an electirc one work ok in the temperatures or should i go for a pretty much manual one? I know that the portable scanners we have at work don't like the freezer warehouse and usually botch up after about 5 mins.

Any advice and tips will be greatfully welcomed!
