Question Neptune's Bellows, Whalers Bay, Deception Island

I know that the gap seams to be around 230 meters more or less but I really do wonder why if there is so much room they go so much on port side in the way in and so much on starboard on the way out leaving so much room bough times to the opposite side.

also,

in late January 2007,
why/how did the MS Nordkapp with a beam of just 19.5 meters ran aground on Ravn Rock if the channel through Neptune's Bellows is around 230 meters wide.

in late November 2006,
did the M/V Lyubov Orlova ran aground in Whalers Bay, why/how

again, thank you very much indeed for input
