The great whales are the largest animals to have ever lived on the planet. They are highly intelligent mammals that communicate with each other over long distances for social reasons and to co-ordinate their fishing and hunting activities. They suckle their young and care for them for a considerable time after birth, often taking them for long migratory journeys to or from breeding or feeding grounds.

There's something about whales that fascinates people, the size, the fact they move so elegantly through water, the huge migrations that they undergo, the speed at which they swim, the fact that they are mammals and share so many characteristics with ourselves.

It all adds up to them being one of the most popular of a group of animals dubbed the "Charismatic Megafauna". Their attractions and behaviour that brings them close to certain parts of the world at certain times of the year, means that whale watching is an increasingly popular vacation pursuit, especially as it can often be combined with other wildlife viewing and travel to some of the world's most spectacular regions.
