Introduction

Summary : Soaring snow-capped peaks, sheltered waterways, sculpted icebergs glowing blue from within and a riot of wildlife characterize the spectacular Antarctic Peninsula. Explore the deep bays and fjords, where massive glaciers flank a rugged spine of snowy mountains. Scattered amongst penguin rookeries and basking seals, reminders of early explorers help bring history to life. Visit working scientific stations, which open the door to fascinating research. Make the most of time on this voyage with a Drake Passage crossing aboard the Polar Pioneer and return flight from King George Island.

Itinerary

Day 1: Punta Arenas, Chile
Make your own way to the group hotel where you will meet fellow expeditioners and enjoy your first dinner together.

Day 2: Punta Arenas / King George Island
Fly from Punta Arenas, Chile to King George Island, Antarctica to be warmly welcomed aboard the expedition ship. Settle in for safety and environmental briefings to prepare for future shore landings while setting off across Bransfield Strait.

Day 3: Weddell Sea
Access to the Weddell Sea is totally ice-dependent. Calved from massive ice shelves, the tabular icebergs of Antarctic Sound create a memorable sight. Our ice-strengthened vessel helmed by a highly-experienced Captain give the best chance to thread through waters alive with penguins against a backdrop of breathtaking volcanic scenery.

Days 4-8: Antarctic Peninsula
Weather systems and shifting pack ice dictate our schedule. Visits may include the vast Adélie and gentoo penguin colonies of Brown Bluff or Paulet Island, fossil-rich Seymour Island and/or historic Snow Hill Island. Hike to spectacular vantage points on Beak and Devil Islands or reach the islands of Prince Gustav Channel. Wherever the conditions take us, wildlife, Heroic Age relics and haunting landscapes are sure to wait.

Head for the Peninsula’s beautiful western flanks to make full use of the late summer daylight hours and relatively ice-free waters. Visit offshore wildlife-rich islands, make a continental landing, visit historic huts and Zodiac cruise amidst bergs. Whales are abundant as they prepare to migrate north. Keep an ear open and listen carefully for the otherworldly courtship song of the leopard seal.

Day 9 – 10: Drake Passage
Petrels, prions and albatross accompany the ship across the Drake Passage. Final talks help round out your Antarctic education before making a ceremonial rounding of Cape Horn, time and weather permitting. Gather for a celebratory dinner as the vessel enters the Beagle Channel.

Day 11: Puerto Williams, Chile / Punta Arenas, Chile
A pre-dawn sail along the Beagle Channel and an early breakfast prepare you before docking in Puerto Williams at dawn. Enjoy a tour of the rustic port and surrounds before boarding your included flight to Punta Arenas, Chile
