Introduction

Fly one way across the Drake Passage and sail the other. South to the Antarctic Circle and beyond lies a remote region of rare beauty. The crystalline waters are rich in whales, penguins, leopard seals, giant brittle stars and huge tubeworms. Sea kayakers paddle in waters rich in wildlife, and hopefully all will visit haunting historic sites amidst stunning scenery that few will ever see. Everyone will revel in the beauty of ice-capped peaks that rise more than 1000 meters from Crystal Sound and, conditions willing, remote Marguerite Bay.

Itinerary
Note, this itinerary operates on the 02/10/14 voyage, the 02/19/14 voyage operates in reverse, flying from Argentina to Antarctica and sailing back again.

Day 1: Embarkation
Board your ship Polar Pioneer in the afternoon. Sail down the Beagle Channel in the evening.

Day 2: Crossing the Drake Passage
Overnight, you enter the Drake Passage. Lectures on the continent's natural history and briefings about landing in Antarctica are scheduled through the day, allowing plenty of time to watch graceful albatrosses and other seabirds from the outer decks.

Day 3: Antarctic Convergence / South Shetland Islands
You cross the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of Antarctica, and may see your first icebergs. In the evening, you approach the South Shetland Islands, a possible location for your first landing.

Days 4-9: Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula
Explore the Peninsula’s west coast with time to watch the frenzied activities of penguin parents and chicks as the summer days begin to shorten. Keep an eye out for cormorant chicks bravely making their first flights from sea cliffs. Zodiac cruise amongst icebergs and floes replete with basking Weddell and leopard seals and revel in the unparalleled beauty of vast, Antarctic landscape. Besides landing on wildlife-rich offshore islands, make a continental landing, possibly hiking up for spectacular views. Continue south as governed by ice conditions. Celebrate in style after crossing the Circle via the ‘inner route’ or the Bellingshausen Sea. With luck, reach magnificent Crystal Sound, pass through the Gullet and steam on to Marguerite Bay, where relatively few have gone before. Orcas, humpbacks and minkes are known to feed in the channels. Visits to historical Stonington, Pourquoi Pas and Detaille Islands are possible before turning north to warmer climes.

Day 9: King George Island / Disembarkation / Punta Arenas, Chile
Arrive at mountainous King George Island. If time and weather permit, explore the penguin and seal-rich waters of Fildes Bay and visit the surprising Trinity Church at Bellingshausen Station before catching our charter flight back to Punta Arenas in Chile. On arrival into Punta Arenas, transfer to the hotel, where tonight’s

Day 11: Punta Arenas, Chile
Enjoy breakfast with fellow expeditioners in the hotel before saying farewells and continuing with your own arrangements.
