Zambezi Twill

Clothing to travel in should be smart, comfortable and practical - often a collection of mutually exclusive requirements, but with Zambezi twill from Orvis, it all comes together perfectly.

Whether you're travelling to Antarctica or the heart of the Zambezi, the lack of facilities to hang clothes up or iron out creases that appear from sitting for long periods mean that the smartest formal wear is out. Comfort is easy to achieve, but presumably you don't want to look like you're slobbing around the house not expecting visitors when out in public! Practicality means having pockets, being hard wearing, and the ability to protect you from the elements, possibly including the probing sharpened probosci of tropical insects.

Zambezi twill fulfils these functions admirably. It is a 10 ounce cotton twill fabric, more substantial than ordinary chino material and strong while retaining wrinkle resistance. Look closely at this fabric's distinctive diagonal pattern and the the reasons for its longevity will be revealed. Extra horizontal or warp yarns, known as fill yarns, enhance strength, resiliency, and relative stretch while maintaining suppleness. It's easily washable too.

The twill fabric comes off the loom as a relatively heavy cloth. Each Zambezi Twill piece is then garment washed repeatedly, leaving the cloth with a characteristic soft, broken-in appearance and feel.

Zambezi Twill is nearly identical in construction to Byrd Cloth, worn by Admiral Byrd and his team in global explorations from the pole to the tropics. Later it was adopted for use by the British Army in the 1940s and was considered the gold-standard in military fabrics for a generation.

Whether you're off to the tropics, poles or more temperate climes, this versatile range of clothing is ideal for the travelling through the variety of climate zones en route.

Cotton is ideal for situations where a variety of temperatures may be encountered. warm enough to be fastened up over an insulating layer underneath and cool and breathable enough to be worn when the temperature rises, but you need protection from biting insects in the evening or are required to wear a jacket.

Zambezi cloth is a remarkably rugged and durable pure cotton twill that is as enduring as the legendary river that inspired its name.
