Shearling / Sheepskin

Shearling or sheepskin is soft and supple, it is lighter than fur, warmer than down and more durable than cloth.

Shearling is lambskin, it is a natural product that is subject to the variations and vagaries that that implies along with warmth, luxury and performance.

The finished article is therefore one that has been manufactured with great care and skill by a trained and experienced human operator at every step of the process. Each shearling garment is individual in its pattern and appearance. It will last for years - decades even with regular care - and will be performing to its best long after conventional garments have fallen by the wayside and been replaced.

Shearling is easy to care for, can be made into a huge range of products and can offer the performance and advantages of fur without actually being fur.

Each skin, is unique to itself, manufacturing articles therefore requires skilled selection, to ensure colour/ character match. Manufacturers routinely use 30% - 50% of the skins that they purchase, any defects or vagaries are eliminated by eye.

Manufacture of articles from shearling is a painstaking and exacting process. Cutting to shape using patterns is done by hand with a sharp knife. The sharpness of  the blade is often a matter of some pride and dexterity in the trade, since the sharpness affects how effectively and safely one can operate, a well "trained" cutting blade is a cherished personal possession.

Traditionally shearling is sewn together edge to edge using over-lockers. The overlocking stitch needs to be watched since if the thread breaks, the whole seam can unravel.

High Altitude Shearling Bomber Jacket
High Altitude Shearling Bomber Jacket
- $995
As test pilots of the 1930s flew their planes higher in altitude and the air grew colder, they relied on shearling jackets to keep them warm. Our shearling bomber represents the warmest most insulated version made. The deep pile insulates better than any other natural material to keep you warm in the coldest weather. And its antique tumbled finish has a classic aged look but an incredibly supple and soft hand. Hand-warmer pockets placed right where you need them. In whiskey.
