Mukluks are a traditional form of footwear,
the word originates from the Inuit people of the Western Canadian Arctic.
They are originally a very simple form of boot for extremes of winter cold.
The design is one of a thick sole to insulate
against the ground where most heat is lost and then a soft upper reaching
to below the knee. The softness of the upper region means that it can be
tied close to the leg with thongs of some kind and allows for additional
insulation to be placed between the outer and the wearer's leg for exceptionally
frigid conditions. A soft upper and close fit also means that air is not
pumped in and out of the boot with normal walking movements as it might
with a stiff leather boot in cold conditions.
Like many traditional costumes, the first
designs and boots for every-day use were probably quite simple and functional.
The straightforward construction of the boots lends itself to an endless
variety of adornment and materials from which they can be made from furs,
to blankets and some very complicated and impressive bead-work.
These boots are now becoming a much sought
after fashion statement, and they're eminently practical for the cold weather
too!
