I took this b&w shot inside Scott's Hut on Ross Island as a sort of tribute to Herbert Ponting, the 'Terra Nova' expedition photographer - he took a near identical shot in October 1911 of 'The Tenements', together with their occupants (Cherry-Garrard, Bowers, Oates, Meares and Atkinson).
Both Bowers and Oates died on the return journey from the Pole in 1912, and there is something quite poignant about the jumble of pony harnesses and men's clothing that still lies scattered across the bunk beds. |
