Like the HQ of a demented super-villain from a James Bond film, Leningradskaya Station perches precariously atop a 1,000 foot nunatak in Oates Land. This science base operated between 1971 and 1992, but was closed following the collapse of the Soviet Union as it was simply too costly and logistically difficult to resupply.
Arriving via helo from the i/b 'Kapitan Khlebnikov', we were only the third group of visitors the base had seen since then - it's a seriously remote, bleak and inhospitable place to be, even when the sun is shining! |

Wow! what a place for a base! Like you said Mike, a real James Bond villains lair.
Makes me all the more grateful that I was on a sea-level base with boats in the summer and loads of wildlife. Now that would really be isolation, and not a lot to do apart from abseiling or extreme skiing by the look of it!
